Enterprise Coding Manager

Department Overview

We're looking for an experienced coding leader who enjoys helping people grow, solving operational challenges, and bringing teams together. As Enterprise Coding Manager, you will support professional coding teams and the Coder Auditor/Trainer team across OHSU. Your leadership will help strengthen coding accuracy, compliance, education, and day-to-day performance.

About the Role

In this role, you will lead coding operations across a diverse, multi-specialty academic health system. You will work closely with coding leaders, coders, auditors, trainers, providers, and revenue cycle partners to make sure teams have the support, tools, and education they need to do their best work.

You will balance the needs of daily operations with longer-term work to improve quality, build staff skills, strengthen compliance, and create more consistent processes across Enterprise Coding.

Function/Duties of Position

Lead and support our teams

• Guide coding operations, including workflow, staffing, workload distribution, and capacity planning for assigned areas.
• Coach and develop Coding Specialists and coding support staff while building a culture of accountability, teamwork, learning, and respect.
• Partner with other coding leaders on daily operations, staffing needs, productivity, quality, and department priorities.
• Provide leadership and support to the Coder Auditor/Trainer team as they deliver education, audits, onboarding, and staff development.
• Help teams succeed through onboarding, training, cross-training, competency development, remediation plans, and career growth opportunities.
• Lead hiring, performance management, succession planning, workforce planning, and employee development.
• Help staff and leaders navigate change with clear communication and a practical, supportive approach.

Improve coding quality, education, and compliance

• Work with the Coder Auditor/Trainer team to strengthen coding education, audit programs, quality assurance, and compliance.
• Use audit results, coding trends, denials, productivity data, and regulatory changes to identify where teams need additional education or process support.
• Bring coding operations and education resources together so expectations and practices are clear and consistent.
• Serve as a trusted resource for complex coding, documentation, compliance, and operational questions.
• Help teams stay ready for regulatory and payer changes and meet federal, state, payer, and organizational requirements.
• Help develop practical policies, standards, and best practices that improve coding accuracy and consistency.
• Partner with providers, operational leaders, and revenue cycle teams to address coding, documentation, and compliance concerns.

Help shape the future of Enterprise Coding

• Work with Enterprise Coding leadership to set priorities and move department initiatives forward.
• Improve workflows, resource planning, and operational performance across assigned areas.
• Review quality, productivity, audit, and operational data to spot trends, understand challenges, and guide decisions.
• Participate in audits, committees, special projects, and organization-wide initiatives.
• Build strong working relationships across coding, clinical departments, operations, compliance, and revenue cycle.
• Encourage new ideas and practical improvements that make work better for staff and the organization.

You are an approachable, experienced leader with a strong background in multi-specialty professional coding. You know how to set clear expectations, support people through challenges, and build strong working relationships. You are comfortable moving between day-to-day operational needs and broader work involving quality, education, compliance, and staff development.

You use data and feedback to understand what is working, where support is needed, and how to make improvements that last. Most importantly, you care about helping people succeed and creating an environment where teams can learn, collaborate, and do high-quality work.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum 3 years of management or supervisory experience.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in healthcare setting.
• CPC, CCS, or equivalent certification.
• Knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPC coding guidelines.
• Knowledge of coding and documentation compliance related to CMS, JACHO, COP and other regulatory agencies is required.
• Highly effective communications; oral and written.
• Leadership methods in performance improvement/quality management.

• Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS.

• Knowledge of CMS and compliance requirements.

• Ability to manage staff performance and workflows.

• Strong communication and analytical skills.

• Knowledge of revenue cycle operations.

• Ability to effectively problem solve and mitigate complex coding scenarios.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in a related field.
• Experience in multi-specialty or academic medical center coding environment.
• Experience with EPIC or similar systems.
• Specialty certifications.
• Additional experience supporting coding education, auditing, or professional development programs.
